Book Review of A Fae in Finance (How to Do Business in Fairie Book 1)

A Fae in Finance: Unlocking the Magic of Modern Life

There’s something undeniably captivating about the intersection of the mundane and the magical, and that’s exactly where Juliet Brooks’ A Fae in Finance (How to Do Business in Fairie Book 1) draws its charm. As an avid lover of both contemporary fantasy and snarky humor, the premise of an investment banker caught in the whimsical chaos of Faerie piqued my interest immediately. Little did I know that this delightful adventure would turn into a cozy escape that left me grinning long after I finished reading!

Synopsis: The story follows Miri, a stressed-out investment banker who suddenly finds herself trapped in the enchanting and perplexing realm of Faerie—thanks to a client with some not-so-conventional business strides. Cue the chaotic juggling act between magical politics, her frantic inner monologues, and her constant worry about her cat, Doctor Kitten. As Miri navigates Faerie’s curious customs and humorous miscommunications, we’re treated to a heartwarming, laugh-out-loud tale that oozes charm.

From the outset, I was smitten with Miri’s candid first-person narrative, packed with snarky humor that hit just the right sweet spot. I initially set out to give this book a four-star rating, but as I reflected on how it made me feel—how it made me laugh, reflect, and merely escape from reality—I found myself compelled to bump it up to five. Honestly, it’s been a long time since a book has made me snort laugh multiple times, and that is no easy feat!

The writing style is incredibly engaging and effortlessly pulls you in. The pacing is brisk, allowing for a delightful blend of cozy chaos and engaging plot twists. Brooks has a talent for balancing the whimsicality of Faerie with the relatable stresses of modern life—especially Miri’s thoughts that often include dry humor about her financial woes and feline concerns. One of my favorite lines that perfectly encapsulates this duality reads: “I felt a rush of affection for the toilet, worthy of a refrigerator magnet poem (ah, my acquaintance, your tender caress; ah, my companion in misery).” It’s moments like these that solidify Miri’s relatability and charm.

What truly resonated for me was how the narrative explores themes of miscommunication and misunderstanding between worlds—both literally and metaphorically. Miri’s pragmatism clashes with the unpredictability of magic, leading to hilarious yet heartfelt moments. These mishaps not only serve to advance the plot but also reveal deeper truths about our own struggles to navigate life’s complexities.

If you’re a fan of lighthearted fantasy or romantic comedies, I can’t recommend this book enough! It’s a standalone, so there’s no pressure to dive into a series, but it offers enough depth and relatability that I found myself wishing for more time with Miri and her enchanting escapades. Perfect for a cozy afternoon, this is a story that hugs you like a warm cup of tea and leaves you smiling.

I’m looking forward to revisiting it, time after time, just like I would a favorite old friend. Thank you, Juliet Brooks, for sprinkling a little enchantment into the business world!
