Book Review: Les Normaux: A Graphic Novel
When I stumbled upon Les Normaux: A Graphic Novel by the incredibly talented (and new-to-me) author, I felt a spark of excitement that reminded me of reading Heartstopper: Volume One for the first time. Here’s the thing: Les Normaux is exactly the kind of story I didn’t know I needed in my life, and now I can’t stop talking about it. If you’re a fan of queer graphic novels, particularly those that weave humor, heart, and a sprinkle of enchantment into their narratives, you’re going to want to add this one to your shelf!
At its core, Les Normaux invites us into a vibrant alternate world—a parallel dimension filled with magical possibilities where our protagonist, a young gay man, embarks on a soulful journey of self-discovery. As he grapples not only with his newfound supernatural abilities but also with his sexuality and the intricate web of relationships he forms, we witness a beautiful exploration of identity. The highs, the lows, and everything in between are depicted with such endearing humor and affection that I found myself smiling from ear to ear while turning the pages.
One of the aspects I adored most was the rich tapestry of characters. The side characters are an absolute delight! The diverse representation of people of color and the inclusion of disability rep add depth to the narrative. Plus, the assortment of supernatural beings introduces an exciting dynamic that raises the stakes beautifully. I appreciate that each character feels distinctly unique, with their own quirks and stories that complement our main character’s journey.
Now let’s talk about the illustrations. The artwork is simply stunning, combining vibrant colors and expressive character designs that draw you into the story. The pacing is spot on—each panel feels purposeful, building a perfect rhythm that keeps you engaged from start to finish. I caught myself pausing to savor certain moments, soaking in both the stunning visuals and the clever dialogue.
I cannot stress enough how much I loved the humor sprinkled throughout. It complemented the more tender moments, creating a balanced narrative that feels both genuine and relatable. One of my favorite quotes (though I won’t spoil it for you!) really encapsulated the essence of self-acceptance, and I found myself reflecting on it long after I’d finished reading.
As I closed the book, I felt a genuine warmth in my heart. It reminded me of the power of stories that embrace the beauty of queer romance and identity, even when that romance is just beginning to blossom. Les Normaux: A Graphic Novel is a perfect read for tweens and up, making it an ideal gift for my daughters and sister-in-law when the hardcover edition arrives.
Overall, if you’re seeking a joyful, heartfelt exploration of friendship, love, and self-acceptance set against a supernatural backdrop, this book is IT. I can’t wait to see where the journey takes us in future installments, and trust me, I’ll be counting down the days until the next release. Until then, I’ll be gushing about this graphic novel to everyone I know!
