Review of Rage (Kate Burkholder, #17)
As a long-time admirer of Linda Castillo’s writing, I was incredibly eager to dive into Rage, the latest installment in the Kate Burkholder series. Ever since I first met Chief of Police Kate Burkholder, I’ve been hooked. The combination of her rich backstory, her struggle to bridge the gap between her Amish roots and her current role, and her unwavering determination to serve her community makes each book feel like reuniting with an old friend. Rage, with its suspenseful narrative set against the humid backdrop of Painters Mill, Ohio, did not disappoint.
From the very first page, the tension was palpable. Castillo’s signature descriptive style comes alive as she details the steamy summer setting alongside the chilling discovery of a dismembered body found by children. My heart raced alongside Kate and her team as they faced not just the ghastly crimes, but also the threat posed by a perpetrator who would stop at nothing—including targeting police officers—to keep their secrets buried. The layered complexity of the plot kept me on the edge of my seat, each twist more surprising than the last.
Castillo excels at character development, bringing an impressive cast to life. Readers familiar with the series will find rich layers to their favorite characters, each demonstrating grit and resilience in the face of adversity. Kate, in particular, shined with her fierce loyalty, intelligence, and occasionally impulsive nature. I appreciated how Castillo explored her internal conflict—one moment fiercely tackling crime, and in the next, wrestling with the vulnerabilities that stem from her upbringing in the Amish community. It made her feel even more real to me, amplifying the stakes as she navigated her way through treacherous waters.
The pacing is another one of Castillo’s strong suits. The narrative flows seamlessly, with moments of shocking violence juxtaposed against quiet reflections, keeping readers entranced. However, I did find some plot elements to be a tad over-the-top; there were instances where it felt more like a TV drama than a police procedural. It’s worth noting that some characters, experiencing extreme events, should have realistically been on medical leave rather than jumping back into the fray. Yet, Castillo’s gripping storytelling and masterful tension-building made it easy to overlook these moments.
Themes of trust, greed, and the weight of secrets permeate the story, making it not just a thriller but also a poignant exploration of community ties and family dynamics. I found myself reflecting deeply on these themes, contemplating how they played out in my own life, which made the reading experience all the more impactful.
Rage is a gritty, action-packed thriller that I would highly recommend to fans of police procedurals and crime mysteries, particularly those who appreciate a strong female lead like Kate Burkholder. It’s an unsettling read at times—but that’s what makes it compelling. I’m already looking forward to seeing where Castillo takes Kate next, and I wholeheartedly urge readers to pick up Rage on its release date, July 8, 2025. If you enjoy stories that blend suspense with rich character development and thoughtful themes, this one should be right up your alley!
