Review of Tenderfoot (Avenging Angels, #3) by Kristen Ashley

Oh, where do I even begin with Tenderfoot? As a long-time fan of Kristen Ashley’s work, especially her Rock Chicks series, I’ve been itching to dive into the romance between Harlow and Javier since it was first hinted at. That tantalizing “will they, won’t they” vibe had me hooked, and let me tell you, stepping back into this world of Charlie’s Angels-esque escapades felt like reuniting with old friends.

In this latest installment, we meet Harlow, a woman whose rigid routines hide a deep longing to be truly known and loved. Then there’s Javier, a man molded by his tough upbringing, yearning for the kind of family he never had. Their chemistry is undeniably electric, but let’s face it—getting to the sizzling sparks requires navigating a tangled web of emotions and side characters that sometimes left me feeling a bit overwhelmed.

The plot unfolds in Phoenix, where our beloved "Angels" are embroiled in a whirlwind of drama, stakeouts, and high-stakes action. It’s classic KA storytelling, blending romance with pulse-pounding adventure. Yet, amidst that chaos, I found myself longing for more depth in Harlow’s family dynamics and Javier’s past. It felt almost bittersweet, like I was given just a glimpse of the myriad layers in their characters without diving deep enough.

Now, let’s talk about pacing, shall we? I have a penchant for that slow burn, a buildup that makes the eventual payoff feel all the more rewarding. Unfortunately, Tenderfoot didn’t fully satisfy that craving for me. The romance unfolds at a speed that, while exhilarating for some, felt a tad rushed to my taste. Javier’s swoon-worthy gestures and declarations were delightful, but I wished for more moments of tension to truly engage me in their relationship.

Ashley’s vibrant writing style shines as usual, with lively dialogues that dance around the page. However, the sheer number of characters weaving in and out made it a bit tricky to keep track at times. I found myself scanning dialogue for context and trying to remember who’s who among the Angels and their extended networks. While I appreciate the camaraderie, I sometimes yearned for tighter focus on Harlow and Javier.

Despite my mixed feelings on the pacing and character overload, I had a good time with Tenderfoot. It’s packed with the OTT drama and heart that KA fans love, and I can’t help but keep an eye out for new romances teased at the end. This book might not top my personal favorites list, but I know it will resonate with many readers looking for a storm of drama and romance.

In conclusion, if you’re a fellow KA enthusiast or someone who revels in high-energy romances peppered with a bit of chaos, Tenderfoot is well worth picking up. While it might not have fully ticked all my boxes this time around, it’s a fun ride that leaves you wanting more—and isn’t that what we all truly seek in our reading adventures?
