Book Review of The Mystery Guest (Molly the Maid, #2)

A Cozy Return to the Regency Grand: My Thoughts on The Mystery Guest by Nita Prose

I remember being swept away by the charming and quirky world of The Maid, so when I learned that the delightful Molly was returning in The Mystery Guest, I couldn’t resist diving back in. Nita Prose has a knack for creating relatable characters, and those of us who are tuned into Molly’s unique perspective know that her journey is always worth following, even if the mystery isn’t the most intricate.

In this second installment, we find Molly, now the Head Maid at the Regency Grand, grappling with a new kind of chaos. Four years have passed since the shadows of the old murder case loomed over the hotel, and just as excitement builds for a high-profile event, the unthinkable happens: J.D. Grimthorpe, a renowned mystery author, dies in the tearoom. What starts as a sudden twist quickly propels us into a character-driven drama that immerses us in the nuances of Molly’s life rather than purely focusing on the crime itself.

Molly is still her lovable, literal self, navigating through life with her endearing social clumsiness. What I adore about her is the way she approaches the world: with an unwavering sense of loyalty and an innate desire for order. Her internal dialogues are rich with wisdom, much of it inherited from her late Gran, whose epigrams still echo in Molly’s thoughts—offering us a gentle moral compass amid the chaos. This richness in character development kept me glued to the pages, eager to catch glimpses of how her relationships evolve, particularly with her beau, Juan Manuel.

While the plot here isn’t the nail-biter that some might expect from a murder mystery, it’s still satisfying in its way. Much like the comfort of a warm cup of tea, the writing is fast-paced and easy to digest—perfect for a cozy evening read. I particularly appreciated the clever title, The Mystery Guest, which operates on multiple levels and invites readers to ponder who, or what, the "guest" truly is.

Yet, there are moments where the writing feels slightly repetitive, echoing the same themes and actions, especially relating to Molly’s new assistant, Lily. While understandable given Molly’s character, it did occasionally impede the flow for me. My yearning for deeper exploration of Molly’s relationship with Juan Manuel was another point of mixed emotions—the glimpses we are given hint at a beautiful bond, but I found myself wanting more of their interactions.

On the downside, the surprise reveal towards the end felt somewhat forced. It didn’t quite land as the story’s climax, but I can overlook it when weighed with the richness of character exploration that fronted this narrative.

In essence, The Mystery Guest is not just about solving a death—it’s about understanding Molly and her world. I’d highly recommend it to those who enjoy character-driven dramas spiced with cozy mystery elements rather than the high stakes of whodunits. This second novel shines when viewed through the lens of Molly’s perspective, making it a delightful read for fans of the first book or anyone looking for a comforting yet engaging narrative.

Embracing back into Molly’s life soothed my soul during these hectic times, reminding me of the beauty in appreciating the smaller details of life—especially the friendships and connections we form along the way. I’m already eager to see where Molly’s journey takes her next!
