Book Review of Whispers of the Elderoak (Daughter of the Earth, #1)

Book Review: Whispers of the Elderoak (Daughter of the Earth, #1) by K.M. Gordon

When I first came across Whispers of the Elderoak, I was drawn in by the enchanting cover and the promise of a journey through both the human and fae realms. K.M. Gordon’s debut novel had me intrigued right from the start; a tale about identity, adventure, and the complexities of two intertwining worlds seemed like it would be a magical escape. As I delved into this quick read, I found myself both enchanted and a little disappointed, leading me to wrestle with my thoughts about it.

At its core, Whispers of the Elderoak follows Ava, a woman grappling with her mysterious past and the truth of her heritage as she navigates the challenges posed by her dual existence in the human world and the fae realm. While the premise is captivating, I felt the execution stuttered at times, particularly in its pacing. The first half of the book, grounded in Ava’s relationships and the familiar rhythms of her human life, was well-developed and engaging. Gordon beautifully crafts friendships that felt refreshingly wholesome, and I loved the way animal companions were incorporated into the story — a delightful touch that never fails to charm me.

However, I couldn’t help but notice a noticeable shift as the plot moved into the fae realm about a third of the way through the book. With only 200 pages left, I felt apprehensive about how successfully the narrative would be able to resolve its conflicts, and unfortunately, my concerns were well-founded. The second half seemed rushed, lacking the depth and exploration necessary for the stakes presented. The titular Elderoak, so central to the novel’s allure, barely made a notable appearance, leaving me confused as to its significance. I finished the book feeling a little cheated; while Ava’s identity revelation offered some closure, it hardly felt sufficient for a full-length novel.

One particular aspect that struck me was the unique world-building. The swamp nymph Nelida, along with other eerie creatures, brought a refreshing sense of atmosphere, adding an enticing layer of magic to the story. However, I did find myself grappling with certain plot inconsistencies, particularly around the timeline of events that went largely unaddressed. This took away from my immersion in the narrative and left lingering questions about the rules governing the fae realm.

Despite my criticisms, it’s clear K.M. Gordon has potential, and I genuinely look forward to seeing how her voice develops in future installments. I recognize that this is the beginning of a series, yet I believe it’s essential for each book to provide a satisfying story arc — something that felt lacking here.

Overall, Whispers of the Elderoak will likely appeal to readers who enjoy light fantasies with intriguing friendships and magical animal companions. While it may not completely satisfy those looking for a tightly woven tale with an intricate plot, it serves as a lovely introduction to Gordon’s storytelling. For me, while I may have left the reading experience feeling a bit underwhelmed, it did spark my curiosity about the potential future adventures in this realm.

Thank you, K.M. Gordon, for the opportunity to read your debut, and here’s hoping the next installment will delve deeper into the rich world you’ve begun to create.
