Book Review of You Belong Here

Book Review: You Belong Here by Megan Miranda

From the moment I stumbled upon the premise of You Belong Here, I felt a magnetic pull—Megan Miranda has a knack for drawing readers into dark, atmospheric narratives, and this one promised a blend of intrigue, tension, and a touch of nostalgia for college days gone awry. With its backdrop of Wyatt College, nestled in the hauntingly beautiful Blue Ridge mountains, I was instantly curious about the shadows lurking behind its picturesque facade.

At the heart of You Belong Here is Beckett Bowery, a character whose past resonates deeply with both regret and resilience. Years ago, Beckett faced a harrowing experience during a twisted hazing ritual called "The Howling," which ended in tragedy. This event not only led to the deaths of two local men but also marked the disappearance of her roommate, Adalyn Vale—underscored by betrayal and deep-rooted secrets. Fast forward twenty years, and the return of Beckett to Wyatt College, in a bid to support her daughter Delilah, sets the stage for tension that crackles like the autumn leaves underfoot.

Miranda’s portrayal of the mother-daughter dynamic is a standout element. The worries Beckett harbors about her daughter stepping into a world marred by her own past felt genuine and relatable. The unfolding narrative from Beckett’s perspective cleverly intersperses the present with chilling flashbacks, creating a layered exploration of how the past imprints on the present. I appreciated how the tale morphed into something that transcended typical young adult themes, as it deals with adult complexities, guilt, and redemption.

The book’s pacing is expertly crafted, particularly as we delve into the third part. Everything shifts into high gear—mysteries unravel, and the reader is left breathless. I found myself captivated by the eerie setting; those hidden underground tunnels and the dense woods surrounding Wyatt College amplify the creeping sense of dread. One highlight for me was Miranda’s vivid imagery, especially when she describes the unsettling "Howling" ritual. It’s unsettling yet fascinating, a reminder of how group dynamics can take a dark turn.

While I must admit that the trope of college students having secrets from their past isn’t my personal favorite, Miranda’s deft storytelling kept me engaged throughout. The writing is immersive, and even though I would rank some of her other works higher, I found You Belong Here to be a compelling read that might just fit snugly into the spooky season lineup.

As I turn the final page, I can’t help but reflect on the nuances of belonging and the haunting remnants of past choices. You Belong Here is a chilling exploration of how deeply entrenched histories can echo through generations. I believe this book will resonate well with fans of dark academia and those intrigued by psychological thrillers wrapped in family drama.
